3) a bad program will not destroy an ecu, it will just not run.

no, a program that runs lean at some point could destroy an engine with out a doubt.

a bad program will not destroy an ecu, but if a clowndick doesn't know what he's doing he very well could have the rom's in backwards and pop a few capacitors on the ecu whicdh would in turn ruin it.

A friend of mine raised this point, and I must say that with the lack of an affordable datalogger and with the large cash investment people put into sr20 swaps, it's not really economical to do your own tuning with an SR when there's a reasonably priced expert tuner in the area (Enthalpy). If you blow an SR, you're up shit creek and the paddle is going to cost you. If I blow a 4g63, I can find a short block for cheap and keep on trucking. Hell, I bought a great condition six-bolt turbo short block for 100 bucks, it's what I'm running right now.

Honda boys (as well as DSMers, Ford EEC tuners afaik, GM people to a lesser extent- they mostly use plug-in memcal adapters) socket their own ECU's and successfully rom tune their cars all the time. Are you saying that Nissan owners rate so much higher on the "clowndick" scale that they'll mess up this simple task that many Honda guys have no trouble with?

Warning: anybody ranking 6 or higher on the Clowndick scale of general incompetence (aka sucking at life) should not attempt rom tuning, college education, or procreation. There, I warned everybody.

just curious, if 240/nissan people had a program similar to DSMLink that allowed you to modify stock fuel and timing curves on a percentage basis at every 500 RPMs throughout the powerband using your laptop, would you prefer that? or would you simply pay enthalpy every time? enthalpy, would you prefer that rather than modifying ROM code?

the way i see it, using this theoretical software, you don't have to burn a new ROM every time you add a mod or change boost levels. you can do your own tuning, which of course should be done at the dyno, but could also be done using a street tune and a wideband O2.

Just looking for some feedback on whether this would be useful and what you'd be willing to pay.
Ex.
Stock fuel curve:
500-----15
1000----15
1500----15
2000----27
2500----48
3000----48
3500----48
4000----48
..

and then you can specify in the software so that the ecu does the following:
500-----(0%)
1000----(0%)
1500----(0%)
2000----(-5%)
2500----(-5%)
3000----(-10%)
3500----(-10%)
4000----(-15%)
..
