use a tripod.
take one pic with the hood open . one pic with the hood closed. make sure to not move the tripod at all or else the pic is done.
what i do . i get both pics.
layer the one with the closed hood over the one where its open.
and just make a slight eraser mark over the center of the hood.
like so?

So yea I happened to come across this thread tonight and figured I might as well try to bring it back from the grave.
Bringing out detail and highlights!
Original photo (not mine):
Now Duplicate the layer (Layer >> Duplicate):
Make sure to rename the duplicated layer. Once you have the image duplicated, desaturate it:
Now this is where the actual changing of the photo comes into play. Your going to want to adjust the levels by moving the adjusters around. Play with it, you can get different results. (Image >> Adjustments >> Levels):
Once you have your levels to where you think they are suitable, change the blendmode of the duplicated layer to "Soft Light":
You can make adjustments via lowering the opacity or undoing your steps and adjusting the levels differently this time. My final product with comparison:

Yea I really want to get one of the screen calibrators, then I could make the money back by letting people rent it for a few bucks

I always thought I'd do that... but I just keep mine to myself.
You're supposed to recalibrate every 3-4 weeks if you use an LCD monitor, and I figured I don't see anyone often enough to let them use it and get it back in time.
Oh, and yeah, some of the highlights are lost - probably got clipped with the level adjustment.
