Holy muttenchopps batman 
probably an easier way would be to take 2 pictures, one one a tripod and the other with the hands apart on timer, then in photoshop remove everything but the tripod and on the transparent background, create a new layer and place that over the 2nd picture and bam! you have magic

The was my first thought too, but then the camera uses the AF assist light to tell you when the self timer's about to go off so it wouldn't be too difficult to know when to throw the camera up.
