It's hard to say whether or not a 200mm tekephoto would satisfy you without seeing the pictures that you dad took. Think distance, you can even open Google Earth and try to measure the distance from your seats to the pits. If you figure out the distance, I'll calculate the lens you need.

He is pretty high up. So prob a 300mm would be better.

Your camera is a 1.5 crop compared to a 35mm, so 200mm would be equivalent to what he has. A 300mm would get you even closer. There are cheap Canon 300mm's that you can look into, no idea how brightly lit the track is so I can't say if you'll be ok with the standard f/5.6 or if you'll need something faster.

I can tell you right now... that if you are not willing to spend over 1K on a telephoto lens... you might as well not worry much about speed and make sure you are taking photos with ample light...

Check out the two recommendations I made... both are under 1K and one of them is cheap enough that you could buy it from Ritz camera, shoot with it & then bring it back for a full refund... that is if they are still doing that.

[sarcarm] here is a link to the terribly paved road of canon lens reviews...

im pretty sure a nascar track at night, you are going to need a serious lens. You know where you are going to be seated at? Though now that i think about it, you really dont see a whole lot of nascar night photos either.
