Are you referring to the Nascar night race or something?

I been using the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens for a long time. Got it when I was shooting with my Rebel 200 film 35mm. It's not an IS lens, though. But you get used to it.

Here are some shots from the Daytona Superbike race I took with it on my 30D. This was on the Sport Preset Setting, so I know the shots could have turned out better. Still not bad for what I think it's a $200 lens now days.

Eventually I plan on getting this one, which is a bit better all around without having to spend 1k+ for a lens to hobby around in...

For evening-night shots I would use f/2.8 lens or else you may not have enough lightning to have proper exposer. If you use a slower lens then you'll have to extend your shutter which then you may get blurry images due to shake.

^ Indeed. I was assuming the track will be well lit, like the Nascar races. I've no idea how well the infield is lit @ night.

ill be in the stands and yes its a nascar race..i know most people still use the flash when they take the pics at the track at night so im jsut looking for something that might be good for that as well as good for every day shooting of objects from a distance

Since when did you start shooting?

Hmm you went down the terribly paved Canon road too?

I'm not too familiar with Canon, but Nikon we have the ultra versatile lens, the 18-200mm, try and find out what Canon's is?

If you are shooting motion shots, I'd go with a tele zoom lens.
Scenic or non-action shots I'd use a fixed zoom lens!

Why would you say both of these in the same post? If you're not familiar with Canon, how can you knock their product?

There are 18-200mm lenses for the Canon mount, but I don't think that's going to be the right focal length here - unless said seats are very close to the track. My guess is that you're going to want a) the longest lens you can find b) the largest aperture you can find (probably f/2..

What sort of distance are you expecting? I'm thinking a flash is going to be of no use, but I'll wait to hear back how far away you think the cars are going to be.
