With the 1Ds Mark III going for $8000, I would consider $800 to be "upper-entry-level" if not just "entry-level"

Well said!

Dont get hooked by marketing!

Funny story - My neighbor saw my camera equipment and ran out and bought a 50d kit with the 18-200mm lens. He later gooed on my screen when he saw a black and white picture I took of my son and said he would give me a run for my money now that he has his 50d, I informed that the picture was taken with my iPhone!

Some people like Apples. Some people like PCs. It really doesn't matter what you buy as long as you know how to use it and are comfortable using it.

That's not hype, that's common sense. Always been a Canon guy, always will be. The D50 I've got drives my batshit sometimes because I take product shots for a living and it just doesn't seem as cohesive as the old Rebel or *gasp* my A630/640.

Personal preferences, no need to get your panties in a collective bunch.

I think collective panties are neat and ironed, no real bunching going on. You're right about the preference, but I'm not sure what you mean by cohesive.

I was happy with my D50 when it was my only camera, but now that I've moved to the D200 it just seems like the D50's options are all buried in the menus.

D400 is just a rumor at this point, but it's looking like this one may pan out. Numerous Nikon dealers are running out of D300's which usually happens right before it officially gets discontinued and a new model is released.
