I had a camera sling and my 65" Rocketfish CF tripod in its bag with me on the plane with no issues or extra charges.

when i went to michigan i took a huge backpack big enough for my 17 inch laptop, xbox360, games and headphones. and then had a skateboard straped to it. along with an overnight bag of clothes. no problems at all.
