They're all close. Maybe wait a bit and watch for the new Nikon's coming out. D3100.
But honestly, she should probably go and hold them and play with the menus herself. Personally, I think/feel the Nikon menu system is much more straight forward and easier to figure out for new shooters. Canon may have changed theirs some lately but I haven't looked.

as sad as it is to say, i have a d60 body for sale. comes with the body, battery, memory card, charger, strap, and box with manuals. so everything you need except a lens.

If you go for Nikon, wait for the new models to come out. Shouldn't be long. The only thing I didn't like about the D3000 is the amount of Noise even at lower ISO. But that's just me.
I've heard really good things about the new Olympus Pen. Its sort of a combination between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR. I haven't persoanlly used one (as I shoot with a Nikon D50), but I really like what I'm hearing about them and aesthetically they're quite pleasing! Check em out here!
