Effects of turbo not hooked up
Effects of turbo not hooked up
I'm installing my kit tommorow morn but not hooking up the charge pipe to the throttle body. The reason i'm doin it is because i have a code and its not gettin fixed till friday. Will i experience a crappy drive with all the extra backpressure or anything else?Ive rode in non boostin turbo dsms and they ran like crap.thanx
well it depends. do you have turbo pistons (low compression) or stock pistons (stock compression, duh)?
If you have turbo pistons (which you should, cuz its the right way to do things ) youll have a Slow honda... i know it sounds redundant, but it will have NO power...
If you still have the stock compression (which is the cheaper way to do things ) your car will only be Slightly slower. The fact that it has the added weight of the turbo system and the added backpressure of the turbine housing will sap up your horsepower... so instead of having H22A power... youll have B20 Power...
Dont worry about it, its totally livable. I would do it if my situation called for a turbo-non-hookup-ery solution. Its all gude man

so he can get all the work out of the way, that way all it needs is a UICP before its ready to make power...
nothing wrong w/ that... i would do the same thing if i was in his shoes. i never get enough time off work to take on big projects, and if i did get the time for once to do something like this, i would do everything i could, knowing that i dont NEED the turbo to be driveable. could have been an obligation that couldnt have been met at any other time, but there might have been something preventing him from completing the project.

Yeah I just wouldnt drive it hard.. not cause you'd break something but more because it wasnt finished. i'd say you'll probabally be perfectly fine. I ran my old 88 300ZXT with a disconnected turbo for about 2 weeks, it was weak but fine...

I've heard that its not good for the bearings in the turbo to run it without a load for an extended period of time. Basically the turbo's "bearing" is a thrust surface and building boost keeps the shaft in place. If the turbo is spinning but not building boost, it try to push its way through the compressor housing (turbine still rotating shoving the shaft towards the compressor). So basically you are running unequal loads on the turbo and will damage the thrust surface.
But I'm sure like most things, if you don't hear it from Secret Services, it can't possibly be true so have a blast.
