Question Turbo on Spec V...?

Just wondering if anybody has one, or at least knows about them. I was always under the impression that the engine wouldn't react well with the turbo, and would only run about 7 psi...? I know there's someone in Clearwater who makes a custom kit for one...

The QR reacts quite well to turbocharging. Your basic kit will run about 8psi and should put down something in the 275whp range. If you want more than that youll probably need to start building the engine for it to be reliable. Most people go for the PTI kit (www.powertechimports.com). As long as the kit is installed right and youre a competent driver the engine should be rather reliable.

Check out www.thevboard.com for a bunch of Spec V info.

Yeah, I knew powertech was good, but as far as I've heard (and this was from one of the manufacturers of after-market turbo kits), the Spec V's engine does not respond very reliably to turbocharging. When it is turbocharged, the boost is usually very low (5 to 8 psi) and produces roughly about 75 - 100 extra wheel horsepower. However, the engine does not react well to early turbocharging and so Area 51, for instance, has yanked the kit it was supposed to release for the Spec V. Since 2003 there are about 3 places that you can go to for your forced induction needs: Travis, SSR, and Power Tech Imports.

Area 51 never even had a working FI kit. They had a car that looked like it was S/C'd but it never ran. The only reason it didnt get produced is cause they went under before it was done. In any case, whoever youre getting your info from isnt entirely accurate. First off, most owners run 7-8psi on a basic turbo setup. This is enough for at least 250whp, but usually closer to 275 as I said before. I dont know of any other N/A 4-cylinder that puts out much more with a basic turbo setup (though Im not too familiar with many other NA-T cars). IMO the QR responds quite well to forced induction. The complaint most people have is that once you want to go beyond a basic turbo setup and into the 3-400whp range, engine internals must be upgraded. So if you want a car that can get you deeper than high 12s, you have to spend a lot of money. If the Spec V werent the bastard child of the Nissan community, maybe youd have more options.

If you havent already, go into the F/I section on thevboard.com and see how many turbo'd Specs are running around. They can also answer your questions better than I can, as I havent been with the SE-R community for a good 6 months now.

If you wanna boost it swap in a sr20 then you can hold 450 all day on stock block.

^^^^Thats also an option, but again its expensive. Its not just a bolt in swap. Unless youre gonna put it in and build it to 400whp yourself, youre probably looking at about the same cost as building a QR to that kind of power.
