Im glad you believe everything the stealership tells you. You are the type of person that doesnt take it in till it breaks. Not to mention if you did a little research you'd discover that they need to be replaced at 60K to prevent your belt from getting teeth ripped off and having your pistons kiss you valves. Honestly I hope that this happens before you sell it and not after someone buys it. G/L.

 

Not sure about VW's 1.8t models, but with Audi, as long as the belt is inspected at every service interval, you are covered up to 105,000 miles. If it breaks, Audi will replace the entire engine free of charge (assuming there is damage).

 

VW's came standard with a four year/50K mile warranty and the extended only covers up to 60K.

 

As does Audi.

I am talking about coverage for the timing belt breaking that is completely seperate from the warranty coverage. I believe it was the result of a class action lawsuit, I have the letter that Audi sent to owners about it.

 

Never heard of it, just the horror stories on Vortex with guys that had the belt go and they were screwed and had to pay a minimum of $1K to fix it out of pocket. To the OP, If you want a shitty timing belt story, PM njwolfturbo on here and ask him what happened to his timing belt and when that went.

 

You can get it done a lot cheaper than $1000 (unless it broke and the engine has damage). The full timing belt/water pump replacement kit is ~ $270, I know an Audi tech that will do the work for $250, so ~ $520 total to replace everything doesn't sound too bad to me.

 

Right but he takes it to the dealership, so $$$$.

 

You said it is a car that currently needs $1000 in maintainence, I am just pointing out that:

a) It doesn't need it
b) If someone bought it and decided to get it replaced, it can be done for a lot cheaper than dealership prices

 

Ok I get it. But not everyone is going to buy a kit off the internet and taking it to a tech that you know. Matter in fact I can bet you that no one buys this car on TR because, well its TR and everyone is a cheap ass low baller.
