I use some foam around the bar where my camera mount is attached to prevent messing up the bar and provide some cushion. See this picture.

Do these harness bars make it really uncomfortable for people to sit in the back??

I've had 3 in the back with the bar. I'm not a crazy-stupid driver with people in the back seat by any means. THey just need to watch their knees when they get in, and I enforce seatbelt rules. In a crash there would be some danger though. The bar runs up high, right behind the seat backs themselves. If they can fit in the back without you having to move your seat as it is, you'll be fine.

Plus, I've had some comment that it feels like a rollercoaster ride
