Driving and racing schools are nothing new. The most established among them have been with us for more than four decades. At the other end of the spectrum, driver coaching has become increasingly commonplace within the semi-professional and professional ranks.

The gap between the two is what Track Rekord aims to fill. Established by professional drivers and instructors Kai Goddard and Andy Lee, Track Rekord offers private coaching services to drivers who participate in track-day events or are pursuing some level of competitive racing.

“We founded Track Rekord for people who want to drive faster, more comfortably and safely at a track of their choice,” says Goddard, “and we made it possible by building a network of skilled, professional driver coaches around North America who can come to wherever the client needs them to be.”

Goddard, Lee and their network of professional driver coaches have, or had, a working relationship with one or more of the established racing and driving schools.

While they say that these schools still provide a valuable foundation, and many of their clients are graduates of one of them, Track Rekord is unique in that it offers a high level of personalized coaching.

“What sets Track Rekord apart is that we can coach our clients in their cars at their home track,” continues Lee. “For the most part, once a student graduates from an established school, the odds are that they are never going to drive that specific car or track ever again. So we go to where they actually drive and coach them to get the best out of the car they’re in now.”
Getting pro-level insights, clients receive session debriefs with sophisticated data analysis on the spot.

Track Rekord has a growing network of 20 highly experienced instructors, many of whom are still actively racing professionally. Each can be booked for all or part of a day, up to as many days as a client needs.

In order to understand their specific needs and objectives, every client relationship begins with a discussion prior to arriving at the track. Experienced track drivers commonly feel they have plateaued and are looking for some objective analysis to help break through to the next level. At the other end of the scale are drivers who are new to track-day events and need coaching to help them get up to speed more quickly. Track Rekord can even go so far as to help those who have just purchased a new car understand its capabilities and limits under the guidance of a pro.

“Track Rekord doesn’t use a set curriculum or method,” explains Goddard. “Every client has differing needs, experiences and circumstances. Until we spend some time observing their driving and talking through how they feel behind the wheel, we can’t begin to give them feedback.”

It’s not all down to observation. Track Rekord coaches come equipped with a portable LITPro data system and video cameras that easily mount onto any car. Together with the client, Track Rekord coaches use the data systems and videos to pinpoint areas for improvement and compare the client’s laps to the instructor’s. Coaches also routinely ride in the right seat to offer real time coaching, as well as lead-follow sessions where possible.

“It all comes down to the personal relationship we develop with each client,” says Lee. “Our coaches are there for you and you alone. We don’t split time with several clients at once and most of the time we’re with you from breakfast until dinner, building that bond of trust which is a key factor in making our clients better drivers.”

Track Rekord offers individual coaching starting at $850 for a half day, not including expenses such as track fees and travel costs. Insurance is available through OpenTrack, specialists in HDPE and track-day coverage. Track Rekord can also help facilitate track access and vehicle rental if needed. Small group coaching is also available, with fees based on the number of participants and skill levels.

At select track-day events, Track Rekord coaches can be available on a per-session basis. Novice drivers will spend time understanding the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics, the driving line, and a variety of high-performance driving techniques. More experienced drivers can focus on particular areas where tenths of a second are to be found. No matter the skill level, Track Rekord seeks to exceed each driver’s goals with safety in mind.

It would have sounding outlandish just a week ago. The 2020 Yokohama Sonora Rally presented by Method Wheel has suddenly been thrust toward the spotlight as one of the last big motorsports events in the world for the foreseeable future.

Day 3 of this year’s five-day race through Mexico’s Sonoran Desert proved to be a difficult one, as unseasonable rain forced race organizers to start the day a bit early. They wanted to try and beat the rain from Caboraca to Puerto Peñasco, a strategy that didn’t quite work out as promoter Darren Skilton and his team made the call to cut a section along the picturesque Sea of Cortez out of the day’s mileage.

All of that didn’t seem to matter to overall Pro Moto leader Skyler Howes riding his No.2 Husqvarna 450. The 2018 Sonora Rally champion managed to keep his overall lead, staying ahead of last year’s winner Ricky Brabec on a Honda CRF450 in the overall standings by just over five minutes. Mike Johnson also had a great day, taking a steady ride to maintain third place in the rally despite being more than an hour behind Brabec.

“Today was everything I love packed into one stage. Fast, twisty, sandy trails through cactus and dunes with tricky navigation,” said Howes after his stage win. “I was having a blast just riding my dirt bike and ended up going fast enough to win the day, which is awesome. Leading out in the big dunes tomorrow is not ideal but still should be a fun day. That’s what I’m all about: keeping it fun.

California’s desert phenom Sara Price and her navigator Kellon Walch (top) have had an excellent showing in their first Dakar-style rally, piloting their No.78 Polaris RZR Turbo S to the top spot in the ultra-competitive UTV class.Oscar Ramirez and Marc Scola (No.77 Can-Am) saw an opportunity to drive their Can-Am into the stage’s second spot, while Lee Banning and Robert Ruiz shook things up a bit, taking third in the UTV class. Mexican favorites, Luis Pelyao and Abelardo Ruinova (No.63 Monster Energy Can-Am) fell back to 4th for the day, but still holding on to a second place spot in the overall rankings.

Today the competitors will face the endless expanse of huge dunes that are one of the defining trademarks of the Sonora Rally. It will be a test, but As the globe hunkers down in self-preservation mode, the 66 entries that comprised this year’s Sonora Rally field are in the Mexican desert doing what they love best.

We should all be so lucky.

While the rest of the racing world sits in quiet hibernation with an eye toward a much better summer, the 2020 Yokohama Sonora Rally presented by Method Wheel has rolled on this week. Outrunning inclement weather and, hopefully, any exposure to COVID-19 this week, yesterday the rally made its way through North America’s biggest sand dunes and the Sonora Rally’s tough Day 4.

In many ways mimicking the barren sandscape seen for decades at the Dakar Rally, on Day 4 the Sonora Rally took competitors through Mexico’s desolate Gran Desierto de Altar (Altar Desert). The area represents the only active erg (a broad, flat area of desert covered by wind-swept sand with little or no vegetative cover) dune region in North America. The desert here extends across much of the northern border of the Gulf of California, spanning more than 62 miles east to west and over 31 miles north to south.

This adventure is a highlight in this year’s Sonora Rally, with competitors challenging themselves over difficult terrain and crucial navigation. It was a 211-kilometer test between the coastal resort town of Puerto Peñasco and the event’s final bivouac just outside of San Luis Rio Colorado.

One of America’s heroes at the 2020 Dakar Rally, Honda factory rider Ricky Brabec took full advantage of his vast knowledge and skill in the dunes yesterday, posting the fastest time and winning the Moto category on his No. 1 CRF450. Brabec beat overall rally leader Skyler Howes by just under three minutes. The performance was good enough to close the gap between Brabec and Howes (No. 2 Husqvarna 450) down to a 1m2s margin. The No. 9 of American Bill Conger sits in third place in the overall Moto standings going into today’s final leg of racing.

In the UTV category, American female off-road star Sara Price and navigator Kellon Walch maintained their top spot in the overall standings despite finishing the day in fifth driving their No. 78 Polaris RZR Turbo S. The day belonged instead to the team of Nick Bruce and Cam Muldner, a tandem that took the day’s fastest time in the No. 71 Can-Am Maverick X-3. Finally enjoying a good day in 2020, PJ Jones — son of off-road and Indy legend Parnelli Jones — and Kyle Westermark completed the run in their No. 63 Can-Am (pictured, top) in second place, just 1m26s behind.

Today the Sonora Rally winds down to a dramatic finish in San Luis Rio Colorado. We’ll have a complete recap tomorrow but, in the meantime, enjoy this stirring video wrap-up featuring some of the world’s most beautiful desert:
