It’s the 50th anniversary of Roger Penske and his storied team’s first Indy 500 this May. While others will do the celebrating, you can rest assured that “The Captain” and his crew will rightly mark the occasion by chasing an 18th win in their usual laser-focused way.

Four of Penske’s wins – as in, almost a quarter of them – were earned by Rick Mears, and 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of his first. It’s a measure of Mears’ intricate understanding of Indianapolis Motor Speedway that Penske’s current roster of drivers for the “500,” including defending winner Will Power and three-time victor Helio Castroneves, still turn to Mears for guidance and, yes, reassurance. Nobody could trim out a car to find that last scintilla of speed like “The Rocket,” and nobody seemed as comfortable at the edge of crazy-loose than the former desert racer.

But seeming to be comfortable and actually being comfortable are two different things, as Mears explains to our own Robin Miller in a fascinating insight into his Indianapolis 500 mindset and philosophy. You’ll find the full story in our annual Heroes Issue.

Speaking of comfortable, that’s something Mario Andretti most definitely wasn’t as, one eye on the oil temperature gauge, he counted down the laps on the way to his first – and, incredibly, only – Indy 500 win in 1969.

Andretti had suffered flash burns to his face and throat in a huge practice crash that wrote off his fast, but fragile Lotus 64 and left him qualifying and starting the race in a car, the venerable Brawner Hawk, that had only been entered to give his team an extra garage space.

Mario recounts that memorable Month of May, and looks back on just a couple of the ones that got away, too, starting page 26.

Putting together RACER’s Heroes Issue is always a labor of love, and with the likes of Richard Petty, Mika Hakkinen, Kevin Schwantz and two giants of IMSA GTP, Geoff Brabham and Juan Manuel Fangio II, also in the spotlight, I think we’ve got ourselves a good one.

Radio Le Mans partners with RACER for 24-hour marathon

As Radio Show Limited’s featured annual product, the global English language resource known as Radio Le Mans, sparks to life for the 87th running of the world’s greatest endurance race, an ongoing promotional partnership with RACER Magazine will ensure the North American market will receive every minute of coverage from Circuit de la Sarthe.

Playing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, RSL’s standard offerings are complemented by blanket coverage from scrutineering, pit lane, and its core trackside commentary booth overlooking the Ford chicanes. At Le Mans, RLM is available via 91.2 FM, and worldwide on the RS1 channel found on www.RadioLeMans.com.

Leading up to the start of this weekend’s race, access to RLM coverage will also be available in the U.S. on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, with Sirius 137 and XM 202 being the featured channels to use. RLM’s featured show, the Michelin Countdown to Green, will bring listeners into the final phase of pre-race preparations, and after the 24 Hour has concluded, the Michelin Post Race Tech show will answer questions submitted by fans.

Helming RLM’s announce team is John Hindhaugh, who makes his 30th appearance as a commentator at Le Mans, and he’ll be joined by Jonny Palmer and Paul Truswell in the booth. On pit lane, the familiar voices of Shea Adam, Joe Bradley, Bruce Jones, Nick Daman, and Andrew Marriott will report on all the strategy and action taking place.

Along with a number of featured programs that will air, including ‘Marriott’s Memories’, RLM fans will be able to watch the commentary calls live as StudioVision cameras spool up inside the announcing compound.

Racer Media & Marketing, Inc. acquires Vintage Motorsport

Racer Media & Marketing, Inc, North America’s largest, independent general-interest motorsports publisher, has acquired Vintage Motorsport, the leading publication covering the historic (vintage) motor racing scene. The acquisition includes the print magazine title, known as “The Journal of Motor Racing History,” along with the digital and online assets including vintagemotorsport.com. D. Randy Riggs will remain on board as the magazine’s editor-in-chief.

Vintage Motorsport now joins RACER magazine, RACER.com and SportsCar, the official magazine of the Sports Car Club of America as titles published by Racer Media & Marketing, Inc (RM&M). In all, RM&M (across various business iterations) has been publishing motorsports content since 1979.

“We are very excited to bring Vintage Motorsport under the RM&M banner,” said Paul Pfanner, co-founder, President and CEO. “It is the most respected title covering historic motor racing – and racing history more broadly – in North America. As the new stewards of the brand, we will proudly carry the standard into the future while using the cross-platform promotional power of the RACER brand to expand the base of Vintage Motorsport’s audience.”

It’s not RM&M’s first relationship with Vintage Motorsport, having provided publishing services in 2001-02.

“I’ve been a reader of Vintage Motorsport since 1986, and would personally like to congratulate outgoing publisher Michael Silverman and editor-in-chief D. Randy Riggs on their success in making the magazine the respected leader in coverage of historic motor racing,” added Pfanner.

Beyond its coverage of historic motor racing, Vintage Motorsport also broadly covers classic car auctions, concours, automobilia and other cultural happenings as they relate to historic race cars and personalities. In fact, in a reader survey, 75% say they refer to Vintage Motorsport before making an automotive hobby-related purchase.

“Vintage Motorsport has come a long way from when it began as a simple newsletter in 1982. We’ve seen firsthand how this segment of the market has grown every year since,” said Riggs. “The time is now to take the next step in our evolution. As part of the RACER portfolio, we will have access to a new audience and a richer social media presence that will take Vintage Motorsport to new heights.”

Outgoing Vintage Motorsport Publisher/CEO Michael Silverman noted, “This is the closest thing to a perfect fit you’ll find in publishing, as Vintage Motorsport will expand the footprint of RM&M to include its authoritative and award-winning content, and RACER’s expertise, resources and proficiency in both print and digital content delivery will ensure Vintage Motorsport’s continued success and expansion. Most notably, D. Randy Riggs will continue at the editorial helm of Vintage Motorsport, and as he has proven for more than two decades, he is decidedly up to the task.”

Both RACER magazine and RACER.com have registered impressive growth since 2012 when the original founding group retook control of the brand. Audited magazine circulation has grown 165%, and RACER.com is now averaging over 420,000 unique visitors per month according to Google Analytics. Total digital audience for May of 2019 topped 1 million users when combining the web presence with RACER social media platforms.

“RACER has always been about the people and the power of motorsport. We go beyond the results to get to the real stories that shape motorsport across a number of levels and genres,” said Laurence Foster, RACER’s editor-in-chief. “With Vintage Motorsport, kindred spirits have been united, and while RACER has some historical features, with Vintage Motorsport, we have the chance to shine a brighter light on the cars of the past that are still competing today.”
