Rare Porsche exhibit until Jan 15 2015
BY Nicole Wakelin
Every auto show seems to bring with it not just an amazing display of production cars, but a selection of prototypes for cars that we may see in the future. Some of those prototypes eventually make it to production with slight changes. Others look completely different and others still never go beyond that initial prototype. You can now see some of Porsche’s most amazing prototypes at a new exhibit at the Porsche Museum.
The exhibit is aptly titled “Project: Secret!” and will feature 14 different cars from the Porsche archives. Here’s 5 that you can scope out before you get there:
Porsche 924
What you see here is the fastest Porsche 924 ever made. It has a turbocharged 4-cylinder that produced 250 horsepower and was developed in 1976. This incredibly aerodynamic car was ready to set a new world record, but it never happened. Instead, they changed their strategy and the car never had its chance.
Porsche 984
Between 1984 and 1987, Porsche created this unique little sportscar. It was intended to undercut the entire lineup and be aimed at the “young, sporty clientele.” But unfortunately, it never made its way into production thanks to the sales crisis of 1987. If it did, though, it would have had up to 150 horsepower.
Concept Car Type 995
Commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, this lightly bodied prototype was developed in 1987 previewing a future sportscar from the German automaker. Engineers used the 928 as a base and envisioned a 3.0-liter V8 under the boot.
Porsche 959
In 1983, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche showed off a car that the world had never seen. The Porshce 959 concept featured a 450-horsepower engine, radical rear styling (at least for a Porsche), and an electronically controlled chassis. One of the first of its kind. Naturally, that car went on to be one of the best Porsches of all time.
Porsche 989
Look familiar? In 1991 Porsche developed the 989 concept which previewed a four-door “family sports car.” It had a V8, rear-wheel drive, and was slated to hit the market in 1995. Unfortunately, it was far more expensive than engineers had hoped for, and put the project on bricks. That is, until 2009 with the Panamera.
These are just five of the vehicles that will be on display at the Porsche Museum, which will include a total of 14 different cars. It’s not just cars either, but also miniatures from the archives as well as films of vehicle testing.
The exhibit debuts on Sept. 17 and will be open to the public until January 11, 2015.
