Heading to my dads house a VR6 (golf) started tailing me. At first he kept prodding me with blips, He at least had an intake and a header, mostlikely at least a gutted cat because it was a stock looking muffler but was still loud.

I resisted and was telling myself that its not worth it, that I dont street race. But as we got further and further out of the main part of town, it became harder to resist.

We stopped at a light and went slowly away, and when I was in 2nd I went to his door with my front bumper and went WOT for about a second to make sure it would be fair (least he knew I wanted to go) then when I heard him get on it, i resumed WOT with my bumper at his door... This started at about 5K rpm in 2nd, so at first he held even with me due to me being out of power and chewbacca (how a VR6 sounds) in its torquey area. But after the rising of the revs and shift to third I was at his front bumper. Let off because there was a corner.

On the next straight I went down into 2nd at 6Krpm (the real rolling sweetspot for this car) and waited for the VR6 to start... He led off getting about a foot jump, but before I shifted to 3rd I had at least 1/2 a car.. shift into 4th had him about 2 cars back, and I rode a little in fourth to make it settled with him about 3 cars back...

As i took the turn off at my road he flashed his lights and we exchanged thumbs up.

I had figured I'd of beaten him by more, but he was definately faster than the RX-8 that I took down a few weeks ago... Anyone know what sort of stuff they can do to make power? This guy was either Intake , gutted cat , + like a header probabally, or maybe a ECU chip.


Pros of this race:
-During the entire leadup to the race, I drove the car easy so I dont think he even heard my CAI at all, or even knew my car wasnt stock.
-He prob thought I was a stock GS with ground controls (no badging on my car and fairly low)
-When I downshifted or was holding revs before the race I dont make much noise, neither do I during normal driving.. so Had to scare the guy when i rolled on.
-Once again I know i got my moneys worth buying this car.
-A much needed racing injection, enough to tide me over for a long time

Cons..

- I dont know the mods of the golf, I wish I woulda asked him so I had a better benchmark of where I stand, hopefully this weekend racing my friends mr2 I can see again (hope to hold even, would be great to win), and tonight my friends CL-S 6-speed (same thing). I know its ninny to be doing all these races from the rolls, but I havent really mastered the launch on this car yet, so I dont feel a standing start is a decent representative of the CAR's ability, I havent taken it to the track yet to work on my meshing with the car...
- Given all the work john put into the car, I still havent determined if it was worth it... But since I just kinda paid for the car, it was definately worth it for me.. We'll see as I race the cars I am most familar with due to them being my benchmarks for a long time...


End results : I'm still quite happy, but I'm really beginning to need some boost again, after having the MR2 turbo over thanksgiving week, I know that I cant stand to be sans boost for more than another 8-10 months, so i'm working hard to get an SR setup....

oh man.. there are two vr6 turbos in fort myers... both friends of mine, too bad you didnt encouter those guys!

assuming that it was a mk4 gti, it could have intake, chip, and exhaust.. most of the good exhausts for mk4 jetta/golfs arent very noticeable and tend to look stock. he mightve had a new intake manifold, new spark plugs.. you never know.. theres not much you can do inexpensively to gain a lot of hp with the VR6 engine.. he probably did not have a header.

 

Well, I know it wasn't me, what color was the car? Also what type of car do you have, an integra? And if you ever want to lose to a VR6, come find me next time you are in fort myers.
